Mitai Māori Village sits in native bush on the banks of the Wai-o-whiro stream, ten minutes from central Rotorua — and its evening is built around the one thing other cultural shows treat as a side dish: the hāngī itself. You watch the earth oven being lifted, steam rolling off the baskets, before you eat.
The evening opens with a pōwhiri and a wero — the ceremonial welcome and the challenge laid down to the chief your group chooses. Warriors then paddle an ancient waka down the stream in traditional dress, chanting as they pass. Inside, the concert runs through waiata, mōteatea, poi and the haka, with the storytelling that explains what each one is for.
Dinner is a hāngī buffet: meats and poultry cooked in the earth oven, vegetables, fresh salads and desserts. Afterwards a guided bush walk takes you to the sacred spring Te Puna Tapu o Tūhoe and a natural glow-worm display, before a poroporoaki — the traditional farewell — closes the night.

Yes. Mitai cooks the meat and vegetables in a traditional earth oven, and the lifting of the hāngī is a scheduled part of the evening — you watch the baskets come out of the pit before dinner is served.
How long does the Mitai evening last?
